Jax had a life that consisted of endless moving to hunt the creatures of the night that feed on unsuspecting humans. He has only ever known life as a hunter raised by his single, night human hunter mother. The only problem is, to be a full member of the hunter clan, you need to be female. As he comes to realize there’s no place for a son in the matriarchal hunter world, Jax decides it’s time to take off on his own and see where he came from. Perhaps his father’s side of the family would be more willing to have a place for a son… but first he needs to find his father. A road trip to follow the source of an inheritance his mother had hidden from him his whole life leads Jax to New Orleans and a clan of night humans that were thought to be extinct. The Vampyre have been gone for close to two decades since their leader mysteriously disappeared. Jax wants to leave this night human filled world behind, but soon discovers that night humans are around every corner. While he does his best to not get involved, night humans tend to find him. Jax just wants to be ordinary, but fate has given him two options that are anything but ordinary. Luckily, fate will let him have a choice after all, but it is not as easy of a decision as he thought it would be.
Warning!
Reading this may cause yet another series to become addicted too.
This book starts off at a good pace, but slows don't pretty quickly. You're getting a lot of information in some pretty long chapters. Not that I'm really complaining. While reading this it kept reminding me of Sarah J. Maas' ACOTAR, which was such a slow pace that I thought several times that I wasn't going to finish it. Luckily if you hit around 60% in this it completely picks up to the point where you really don't think you can put it down.
I really like McMichael's take on the Night Human world is pretty interesting. Now I have only read the first book in the Legend of Blue Eyes series (I have book 2, I just need to get through my massive TBR to get to it). I'm pretty sure that these aren't connected to one another, but I can say this. Neither of the books I've read have been anything like your typical vampire books that are out there. Even this book compared to Legend is completely different.
Also I might add, there is no Strong Female Lead in this. Which is quite different from what my reading habits have been lately. It was a good change!
